HISTORY

The first part of this mansion was built by a person whose last names were ÁLVAREZ ARMENTA in the year 1650 and was completed by don ANDRÉS DE MADARIAGA y MORALES, CONDE DE PESTAGUA towards the year 1750.

He was rich, influential and one of the “illustrated” people, who was really pursued by the Jesuits. He was commissioned in 1767 to notify the Jesuit´s Order in Mompox, of their expulsion from all lands owned in America by King Charles III of Spain. The count was then the Mayor of Cartagena appointed by the King. In 1769 the Title of Count of Pestagua was granted by the crown through Royal Mandate.

He lived many years in this house enjoying the privileges granted by the crown: slave trade, importation of wheat flour, tobacco and sale of “aguardiente”, since he shared with Marqués de Valdehoyos the property of the distillation device.

The House of Don Andrés de Madariaga y Morales, Conde de Pestagua, identified today with number 33‐29 of the Calle de Santo Domingo or Calle Real, as it was called in colonial days, with its high prestigious gate and a long balcony, symbol of nobility, has been considered one of the best constructions within the walled area of the city.

The first floor was destined to the servants, slaves and stables. At the entrance yard, we find the large cistern where rain waters were stored as they dropped from the roofs, since Cartagena did not have an aqueduct and the house supplied water to the adjacent houses built years later by the Count.

The imposing stairs take you to the second floor where the bedrooms of the Count and his family were located, as well as the big ball room for parties and meetings. It shows a rich wooden paneling on the roof, a typical architectural element found in Cartagena.

It has been the living place of many important persons. Around the year 1919, Don Luis Patrón Rosano, a humanist and a pedagogue as well as Governor of the Department of Bolívar in two occasions, lived in it as a tenant. The owner was Don Mauricio Toledo.

It passed through succession to the descendants of Don Andrés in 1940, when the Priest Camilo Villegas Ángel "bought this mansion, high, built with the materials used in old constructions, with a tile roof, masonry of lime and chant ", as it reads in the deed of those days; he lived in it and used it as the Priest House for several years, until he sold it to the Capuchin Tertiary Congregation of the Holy Family then used by them as a convent for many other years. In 1981 it became property of Doña EPIFANÍA O. DE BERDUGO and headquarters of Sacred Heart of Jesus School.
